Types of Dimmer Switches:

Dimmer switches come in 3-way, single-pole, companion, or wireless.

The benefits of a dimmer switch are numerous.

1. Save Energy!

When you dim your lights, the amount of light output is diminished; less wattage is used, and thus less electricity consumed lowering your electrical bill. The amount of energy you can save is contingent on three factors.
  • Watt Usage. Percentage of light dimmed determines the amount.
  • Duration. How long you run your lights for.
  • Bulb Type. The type of bulb determines the amount of light produced and energy used.

The bulb types used today are as follows:

  • Halogen Incandescent bulbs
  • Compact Florescent Lights (CFL)
  • LED (light emitting diodes)

2. Increase Bulb Lifespan. With less usage comes an increased bulb lifespan. You could expect double the lifespan. Conversely, dimming a non-dimmable CFL will reduce its lifespan so be sure to check.

3. Décor. Upgrade the look of your walls in minutes. A dimmer switch is very easy to install.

How Does a Dimmer Switch Work?

Contemporary dimmer switches work much like if you turned the switch on and off yourself. Dimmer switches function extremely fast by turning off a light on and off approximately 120 times a second. They use a transistor called a TRIAC. The TRIAC turns off when no current flows through it.

Note: If you notice you have excessive dimmer heat build up, you may have an older resistive only dimmer or the bulbs you have in your lamps maybe stronger than needed. For example, if you have a lamp designed for a 60-watt bulb and you put in a 75 watt bulb, that will contribute to heat build up. Newer dimmers limit electricity without wasting it.
