You can remove the smoke detector off the base and unplug the wiring to bring it down to change the battery.
How do your remove the battery to replace with a new battery?
The battery door is on the front of the unit underneath the test button. You would push it in and slide it down to expose the battery. From there you can remove the existing battery and replace it with a new one. You would then slide the battery door up for it to closed.
