How Is SEER Determined?
An air conditioning unit’s efficiency is determined by its total cooling capacity during standard annual usage divided by its total energy consumption for that same time period. Essentially, the higher the SEER rating, the less energy is needed for the A/C unit to operate. The formula for determining SEER is:
Capacity (Btuh) x Hours x Electricity Rate = Operating cost
What is a Good SEER Rating?
Today, the SEER ratings of air conditioners can vary from 13 to 24. SEER ratings of 13 and 14 are considered average efficiency, while units with ratings of 15 SEER and above are seen as high efficiency.
